November 9, 2010 by Real Estate Investor Comments Off
David Goodhue – AHN News Reporter

Long Beach, CA, United States (AHN) – An engine room fire on the Carnival cruise ship Splendor has left the vessel drifting powerless 150 miles south of San Diego, Calif.

Tugboats are on their way to take the vessel to Ensenada, Mexico “in an effort to get the guests home as quickly as possible,” according to a Carnival statement.

The fire, which was first detected at 6 a.m. Pacific time on Monday, is out and there are no reports of any injuries, but the ship is without air conditioning, hot food services, flushing toilets and telephones.

The Splendor was on the first leg of a seven-day Mexican Riviera cruise that left Long Beach, Calif. on Nov. 7. The normal itinerary includes stops in Puerto Vallarta, Mazatlan and Cabo San Lucas. The ship carries 3,299 passengers and 1,167 crewmembers.

Along with the tugboats, the U.S. Coast Guard has sent aircraft and cutters to the ship’s location, according to Carnival.

The ship’s crew is providing passengers with bottled water and cold food. Passengers were initially asked to leave their cabins and gather on the open upper decks of the ship, but Carnival says passengers now have access to their rooms and can move about the ship.

Carnival will give guests a full refund and reimbursement for transportation costs. The cruise line is also offering guests of the adrift ship a complimentary future cruise.

Too Many Unfair Rules, Say Canadian Food Manufacturers

September 15, 2010 by Real Estate Investor Comments Off
AHN News Staff

Ottawa, Ontario, Canada (AHN) – Food producers from five Canadian provinces are complaining of too much regulation, which affects their competitiveness, sustainability and food safety. Producers from British Columbia, Saskatchewan, Ontario, Quebec and Nova Scotia charge Ottawa has overreacted to food safety incidents that have led to more rules to arrest the spread of diseases on farms.

The feedback came during 10 focus groups commissioned by Agriculture Canada held early this year.

The producers said small food manufacturers were most affected by the overreaction to food safety issues. They also blamed pressure from the U.S. and other nations for the slew of additional rules producers face.

The situation created an uneven playing field, food producers said, because food imported into Canada usually does not go through the same stringent rules and procedures.

To help local manufacturers meet Ottawa’s benchmarks, the federal government has made available funds to implement food safety systems in the provinces. Food producers could draw a maximum of $3,000 per farm from the fund at a 90:10 sharing basis for the implementation phase of the program.

Food producers could also avail of funding for the Farm Business Advisory Services Program under which they could borrow 100 percent of up to $1,900 for advisory fees and 85 percent support for advisory services fees of up to $3,000.

The advisory services include business strategy, succession planning and risk assessment.
